Community Building

Peter Block has outlined a foundation for shifting habitual cognitions that can otherwise entrap us. His approach has a profound impact on my approach working with groups of all affiliations:

  • Community is built by focusing on people’s gifts rather than their deficiencies.

  • Most learning takes place in peer-to-peer interaction.

  • The context that restores community is one of possibility, generosity and gifts, rather than one of problem-solving, fear and retribution.

  • Taking responsibility for one’s own part in creating the present situation is a critical act of courage and engagement, the axis around which the future rotates.

  • Everyone invited into the space and process have all the resources necessary to make the change.

Punkademics is a great read on punk rockers making their way into academia from a no-BS background.
